Écho des lignes

The project Echo des lignes #1–5 comprises five installations (post-processed linocuts, in situ spatial art, sound drawings) with one more, Knöchelchen, Knötchen, Köpfchen (“Bones, joints, brains”) as their centrepiece.The initial point for each installation is a linocut based on the shadow of a paper object. This subject is then developed along two separate paths: At first, the block is modified by progressively removing uncut areas. Subsequently the prints are extended with inked drawings, resulting in five variations (per Echo): Echo des lignes #1–5. Building upon the same theme, sound and in-situ drawings emerge. The act of drawing happens not solely on paper but also in space and in time.The creative process resembles an inquiry, a research of open questions—using different means. The underlying theme represents the question, the variations on paper, as spatial installation, and as sound stand for the answers.Saupper thus fuses formalistic strategies with intuitive ones. Taking the thought further, her approach, her dancing around and drilling-down into a theme might also be viewed as a parable about scientific methods, as a quest for truths, for insight which can never be solely conceptual in nature, never solely spontaneous; only in the combination of these two patterns will this quest yield an abundant harvest.The installation Knöchelchen, Knötchen, Köpfchen also makes the brittleness that we experience as we look for answers, for solutions, visible; the dread of failing and our fear of being offended; and the realisation of our own impotence.
