Portrait of a Landscape

Portrait of a Landscape chooses varied approaches to focus on how we handle catastrophes and how we choose to remember them. The concept of a landscape is employed as a synonym for one’s homeland; a zone promising safety and protection, an area that refers, by way of the past one experienced there and of the future one dreamt up there, to one’s life in its entirety. The various installations depict catastrophes without any attempt at an explanation. Scenarios are hinted at; our own experience and dread complete them, thus driving home just how far we go in becoming the origin of our fears. Flooded by imagery and visual media as we are, are we even capable of distinguishing true threats from those insecurities that only become catastrophes as they feed on our anxieties? Dimensioning the objects and incidents with an overlaid grid that is reused over and over again hints at the possibility of those incidents having been actively shaped: Created by man, planned and prepared well in advance. On comparing the data, one cannot help but sense that any semblance of control has been lost long ago and that further subdivision only servers to soothe one’s own mind. In sits abstractness, the grid becomes a system of simplification and trivialization.
